Areas of Expertise: Literature of the French- and Spanish-Speaking Caribbean

Mary Ann Gosser-Esquilín is a Professor of Spanish and Comparative Literature. She completed her A.B. degree in French at Bryn Mawr College, PA; her license and maîtrise in Comparative Literature at the Université de Provence I, Aix-en-Provence; and her doctorate in Comparative Literature at Yale University. Her areas of interest encompass the literatures of the French- and Spanish-speaking Caribbean. She has taught at Rutgers University; at Denis Diderot, Université de Paris VII; and at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica, as a visiting Fulbright Scholar.

Her teaching awards at Florida Atlantic University include the Alumni Association Faculty Talon Award, the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (2001-2 and 1994-95), the Award for Excellence and Innovation in Undergraduate Advising (2012), and the FAU Division of Student Affairs Vice President’s Diamond Award for a Faculty’s Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs (2018).

She is President of Florida Atlantic University's Chapter 128, Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

She is also a member of the editorial board of Sargasso: A Journal of Caribbean Literature, Language and Culture.

Majors in LLCL who meet the following criteria will be eligible to pursue honors in French, Linguistics, Spanish, or Italian

  1. Student has already completed at least 9 upper-division credits in the major, including FOL 3880, but fewer than 100 credits toward the degree
  2. Student has earned a minimum overall GPA of 3.2
  3. Student has earned a minimum overall GPA of 3.5 in the major
